It was warm and sunny at the Del Mar Racecourse - just what you would expect for California this time of year. Shanice helped prep Rosie for the Bob Hope Stakes - this would be the black fillies last race before the Breeders Cup prep set in in earnest. Bringing Rosie to the States to campaign had proven to be an excellent decision. The 2yr old was turning in a far better performance than she had when still in the UK, and the SVI team was confident she would put in a good run today.
Rosie had bumped herself in transit to California and had some minor swelling the first day out, but she was right as rain the next day and her practice runs on the track were excellent. Still Shanice couldn't help but run a quick hand over the filly's legs again before leading her to the paddock.

Tatum joined them in the walk around the ring and the two chatted last minute strategy until the call came for "riders up!". The jockey was boosted up and he gave the black filly a pat before they walked out to the track. Shanice headed to a spot along the rail, elbowing in with other trainers and owners "jockeying" for good postitions to view the race. "Come on baby, make us proud", Shanice whispered as they watched the starters loading in the final horses. There were some fractious youngsters in the field, (not surprising for a field of babies) so it took a few minutes to get everyone settled. But finally there was that moment of hushed anticipation, and the bell rang!

Rosie wasn't the quickest out of the gate, but she wasn't far behind. The horse in post 2 came out a little crazy, bumping into the horse's on both sides. Shanice sucked in her breath in worry, but Rosie recovered and surged towards the rail with the main pack. Thank heavens for Tatum - he was a natural at steadying the young filly! They moved into the first turn only three back and just off the rail. Rosie was moving well and Shanice knew the mare could give them more. She was chomping at the bit behind the leaders, and Tatum was looking for an out to leave the pocket they were in and be able to turn her loose. The dirt in her face was starting to upset the youngster, and Tatum pulled her back a bit. But now they were approaching the final turn and were farther back then ever and still blocked in. Shanice in the stands was gripping her program and folding it nervously - "come on, come on, get her out of there!"

As the field rounded the turn, the leaders went a little wide and Tatum saw an opening. Was it enough to send the filly through? Doubt flashed through his brain, but Rosie saw the opportunity at the same time and went for it on her own initiative. The mare surged forward with increasingly powerful strides! Shanice gasped and held her breath. With the way the filly was gearing up, if she could make it through that gap, she would likely run away from the field - but it was going to be close...
