Story

Thankfully, Dr. Allison was able to come down to the paddock to check on Silver quickly. It was hard to really examine the writhing, colicky mare who still was displaying aggression in between spasms. But it didn't take long for the vet to give her verdict - "if we get her to surgery ASAP, we have a chance. I don't think we can wait long though. What do you want me to do?" She turned to Mae with the last query.
Mae paused, chewing on her lip. After a minute, she concluded, "let's go for it."
----
Several hours later, the mare was in recovery. "How'd it go?" Mae asked the veterinary surgeon. "We were able to fix the torsion in the small intestine. The real test now will be her recovery. The damage was more than expected. And you mentioned she is normally agressive, right?"
"Yeah, we haven't been able to handle her at all yet." Mae said ruefully.
"Well, we'll need to keep her sedated right now for her safety as well as our staff."
"I've been trying to spend time with her and it has seemed like she has quieted down. This may give me a chance to spend time even closer though. Maybe we can get a breakthrough..."
"It's worth a shot" the surgeon agreed.
-----
Over the next week, Mae spent time every day grooming, touching and talking to the recovering mare. She trimmed the badly tangled mane and tail - they would grow out eventually. The vet slowly reduced Silver's sedation, and to everyone's relief the Nordanner mare seemed to be responding positively to the love and regular care. "I think she realizes your trying to help" Allison said with a smile as she checked in one day. "Whatever her past experiences were, she's learning that not all people are bad."
"That's right, gal" Mae said as she stroked the mare's silky nose. "We're the good guys!"

Did a bit of internet research on colic, colic surgery and recover before I started this storyline. Probably not 100% accurate (I've never had a horse colic) but I figure it gets the idea across. Originally I was contemplating illustrating the actual surgery, but wimped out and just went with post-surgery instead.
