Story

The winter was thawing into an icy, mucky spring. While it was probably the ickest time of the year, everyone was looking forward to the coming warmth and blossoming of a new season. Training inside was boring, but the brisk temperatures outside were not everyone's cup of tea. Grooming was an extended chore, although many of the horses enjoyed the added time and attention.
But there was one who, unlike the weather, had yet to "thaw" - Silver. The mare was still holding fast to her cantankerous ways, and Mae was beginning to question her choice. Very few horses can not be salvaged, but for the first time if she had come upon one of those rare cases. It was hard to get close enough to prove you meant no harm. It had been two months, an the mare was in desperate need of regular care. But tranquilizing her seemed the only safe way to do so to date.
It was mid afternoon on this particular springish day, when Patrick was slogging out to the round pens to do a little ground work with Zita, the Murgese filly. He happened to glance off to his right over the black head of his charge. But something seemed different. Or out of place.... He couldn't put a finger on it at first. There were the appy peafowl nordanner "twins" - Éve and Matoaka. They were standing by the fence line  between their paddock and Silver's. But they were always together those two, so that couldn't be it... Wait! They were standing near SILVER's paddock? They never stood there! "Where is that silver she-devil?" Patrick muttered to himself as he slowed and then stopped. There - movement caught his eye near the fence. It looked like Silver was laying down. But taking a nap? That didn't seem likely. Patrick put Zita in the round pen and walked closer.
Éve looked over at him and nickered before returning her gaze to the prostrate muddy mare nearby. One look and Patrick knew that Silver was in serious trouble. He quickly phoned Mae and Dr. Allison. "It's Silver. She's down and it doesn't look good." Despite the chilly weather, the mare was sweating profusely, rolling, thrashing and grunting. She kept turning towards her belly. She looked at Patrick for a brief moment and the look of pain and fear was clear.
